Danish Warmblood
Also Known As: Dansk Varmblod
Established in the mid 20th century, the Danish Warmblood registry is the national Warmblood stud book for the county of Denmark. The breed was created by crossing local Danish mares (frequently Frederiksborg stock) with top sport and warmblood studs from all over Europe. The foundation lines of the breed are heavily influenced by the Frederiksborg, Thoroughbred, Anglo-Norman and Trakehner. Today, the breed still accepts approved horses from other Warmblood stud books, as well as select Thoroughbreds, Arabians and Anglo-Arabs, though the emphasis is on breeding Danish with Danish. When a Danish Warmblood is crossed with a Knabstrupper, the foal is either a Danish Warmblood (solid) or a Knabstrpper (spotted), and is considered purebred. The ideal Danish Warmblood resembles a Thoroughbred in conformation, and typically excels in dressage or show jumping (and therefore also in eventing).
