Frederiksborg
Also Known As: Frederiksborger, Fredriksborg
Denmark's oldest native breed, the Frederiksborg may be small in population today, but its influence is seen around the world! Founded by King Frederik II in 1562, the breed's foundation is largely Neapolitan horse, Norfolk Roadster and Arabian, and the breed was traded around Europe among other prestigeous state studs. In fact, the Frederiksborg influenced most of the world's Iberian and Baroque breeds, and a grey Frederiksborg stallion named Pluto born at the Royal Frederiksborg Stud in 1765 went on to become one of the 5 founding stalions of the Lipizzaner breed.
Today the Frederiksborg horse excels in dressage, combined driving and show jumping, and is mostly chestnut in colour with extensive white markings. Modern Frederiksborg lines were restored and diversified by introducing Friesian, Oldenburg, Arabian and Thoroughbred lines, and the current stud book accepts select Danish Warmblood and (rarely) other European Warmblood, Thoroughbred and Arabian studs into its breeding program.
