Gotland Pony
Also Known As: Gotland Russ, Russ, Skogsbagge, Skogsruss
The only pony breed native to Sweden, the Gotland Pony originated on the island of Gotland off Sweden's southeast coast. A light breed with a narrow build, this sturdy breed can be used by children and small adults alike for both ridden and driven activities. Mealy/Pangare is common on Gotland pony coats, and the Wild Type mutation of the Agouti allele (A+, "Wild Type Bay") is also quite common.
English speakers, do not be fooled by the seemingly obvious implications of the alternate breed name "Russ," as this breed and its name have nothing to do with Russia! The name Russ, coming from the now-obsolete Swedish word ross, derives from the Old High German word hros (origin of the English word horse) and means "riding horse." The breed resembles the Hucul and Konik of Poland, and though long standing claims describe the Gotland Pony as being direct descendants of the Tarpan, DNA evidence has shown that this is unlikely. A revival effort for the breed involves the importation of two Welsh stallions in the 1940s, but the breed remains largely pure today.
Gotland Ponies are popular as childrens horses, particularly for harness racing, but are also used in a wide variety of other disciplines and excel in dressage, show jumping and eventing.
